About Set n Stone

The part you never see is the part that lasts.

I'm Chris Foulkes. I started Set n Stone Hardscapes in Groveland to build the kind of work I'd want in my own yard. Patios, walkways, walls, steps, driveways, ponds and lighting across the North Shore and into southern New Hampshire.

Most of what makes a hardscape last is buried. On one backyard patio I dug two feet below the bottom of the blocks and amended the soil because the whole site was clay. That job took a hundred tons of stone before a single paver went down. Nobody sees that part. They just notice the patio still looks right five winters later.

The other half is the eye. I look at how the grade falls and how the space is going to be used before I draw anything. Then I cut it clean. No four corners meeting, no long bond joints, random pattern that actually reads as random. That takes years to get comfortable with, and it's the difference between a patio and a nice patio.

You get a full scope of work, a description of every phase, a set payment schedule and the warranty in writing before I break ground. No surprises halfway through.

How a project runs

Three phases, one crew.

Every job follows the same order. You'll know which phase we're in and what happens next.

PHASE 01

Design & layout

We walk the property, talk through how you want to use the space, and I read the grade and drainage before anything is priced. You get a written scope, a description of each area, a payment schedule and the warranty terms up front. You can sign and pay the deposit right from your phone.

PHASE 02

Excavation & base

This is where a hardscape is won or lost. We dig to the depth the soil actually calls for, amend or replace bad material, and build a compacted base with proper drainage. On clay sites that can mean going two feet below the bottom course.

PHASE 03

Set, cut & finish

Pavers set and cut by hand, random pattern with no long bond joints and no four corners meeting. Edges locked, joints swept, grading tied back into the lawn. The site gets cleaned up at the end of every single day, not just the last one.

What the neighbors say

Real reviews from homeowners in Groveland and the surrounding towns.

★★★★★
Chris and his team did a fantastic job on our patio. From the attention to detail to ensure it lasts a VERY long time, to the design detail to the nightly clean up making sure the space was always left clean at the end of each day. They ran into an unexpected issue when they pulled the original deck up but that didn't stop anything, just a shift in the plan. Highly recommend.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Groveland, MA?

Price comes down to square footage, the paver you choose, how much excavation the site needs and how easy it is to get equipment into the yard. A flat, open backyard with good soil costs a lot less to prep than a sloped site with clay or ledge. Rather than quote a number sight unseen, we walk the property, measure it, and give you a written price with the full scope broken out. Estimates are free.

How deep should the base be under a patio or walkway in New England?

There's no single number. It depends on the soil and what the surface has to carry. A typical walkway needs less base than a driveway, and both need more than the minimum if the soil underneath is clay or organic. On one Groveland patio we dug two feet below the bottom of the blocks and amended the soil because the whole site was clay. Skipping that step is the number one reason hardscapes settle and heave after a couple of Massachusetts winters.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Estimates are free and there's no obligation. Call or text (978) 861-3540 and we'll set a time to look at the property, talk through what you want, and send you a written proposal with the scope of work, materials, payment schedule and warranty spelled out.

How long does a hardscaping project take?

A front walkway can be done in a few days. A full backyard patio with a retaining wall, steps and lighting runs a couple of weeks depending on size and weather. We give you a start and completion window in the proposal, and we don't split the crew across three jobs at once. Once we start on your property, we stay on it.

What areas do you serve?

We're based in Groveland, MA and work across Essex County and the Merrimack Valley, including Newburyport, Amesbury, Andover, Lawrence, Salem, Beverly, Gloucester, Rockport, Lynn and Lowell. We also cross the border into southern New Hampshire for Nashua, Portsmouth, Exeter and Rye, and out to Kittery, Maine. If you're nearby and not on the list, call and ask.

What's the best time of year to install a patio or retaining wall in Massachusetts?

Spring through late fall is the main build season, and the calendar fills up early. If you're planning a spring or summer project, reaching out over the winter is the easiest way to get the start date you want. Late fall installs are often possible depending on ground conditions.

Do I need a permit for a patio, wall or driveway?

It depends on your town and the project. Most standard patios and walkways don't require one, but taller retaining walls, work near wetlands or conservation land, and changes to a driveway apron often do. We'll tell you what your town requires before we start and handle the coordination.

Do you work with builders and general contractors?

Yes. We handle hardscape packages on new construction and development projects alongside our residential work, including driveways, walkways, front entries and patios across multiple lots in the same neighborhood. Send over the plans and we'll price it out.

Is your work warrantied?

Yes. The warranty is written into the contract you sign before we break ground, so it's clear what's covered and for how long. Nothing is left to a handshake.

How do I pay, and do you take a deposit?

Projects run on a set payment schedule laid out in your proposal, starting with a deposit to lock in the date and materials. You can sign the proposal and pay by card or bank transfer straight from your phone. If you already have an invoice from us, you can pay it any time using the Pay Now link on this site.
